Back to Basics
|
Country Life has put together a few helpful pointers to prepare you for the new season consisting of a few basic checks on your fishing rods, reels, lines and nylon as follows:
Applying wax to the rod joints. |
Upon inspection of your fishing rod you might find that the section joints are slacker than they used to be, if that is the case, a little rub with some wax on the male joint will add enough resistance to stop the rod sections separating. Any separation of the sections would normally occur whilst casting, usually resulting in rod breakages. |
Examination of the rod's line guide's. |
It’s also worth paying particular attention to the line guides on your rod as some of them might have worn/grooved or even lost a ceramic insert through normal use. If you find that any of your line guides are damaged then the best advice we can offer is to get them replaced, it certainly works out cheaper than replacing a fly line or spool of braid or nylon. |
Applying oil to the reel. |
As far as fishing reels are concerned a good clean and oiling is usually all that’s required to ensure everything runs smoothly this should stop the gears etc from seizing up with dirt and grit, some manufacturers also supply a servicing facility should it be required. Also check to ensure there is no excessive play between the spool and the reel which could result in the line getting tangled or trapped. |
Cleaning the fishing-line. |
Finally it’s worth giving your fly lines a good stretch before using them again for the first time, this will help to reduce any line memory they may have picked up from being left on the reel. Also a gentle clean with some warm soapy water and a fresh cloth will remove most of the dirt and grime on your lines (do not use any strong detergent cleaners, a little amount of soap is all that is required). It is also worthwhile checking your nylon and replacing any that has been spooled onto spinning reels etc for any length of time. |
